MOJAVE INVITATIONAL

champs Cameron Smith & Ian Hanuscin

Cameron Smith and Ian Hanuscin captured the biggest prizes of their JBT careers, capturing $1,000 scholarships each as champions of the 2008 JBT Mojave Conference Invitational Tournament, hosted by Gold Coast.

JR Monteith led the qualifying round on a very demanding lane condition to grab the top seed for the 16-person, triple elimination stepladder finals, but it was #9 Cameron Smith who caught fire in the matchplay, starting 5-0 to gain the advantage headed into the late rounds.

In round six, Smith made it 6-0, handing #16 seed and last chance squad winner BJ Baker his second loss.   In other matches, #15 DJ Sloan eliminated Monteith, #4 Allie Ijams ousted #7 Jeff Spiesman, and #14 Theo Douthit eliminated #2 Nathan Panaligan.

In round seven, Ijams enjoyed a valuable bye, while Douthit eliminated Baker, and Sloan handed Smith his first loss.  In the next round, DJ beat Cameron again, while Theo eliminated Ijams, who enjoyed one of the best runs by a female in a JBT major.

With three bowlers left, Smith earned the bye, while Sloan eliminated Douthit, who finished third.  This set up a seemingly inevitable title match clash between Sloan and Smith, with Cameron needing to beat DJ twice to win.  The tide turned in the middle of the first game, when Cameron turned a lucky strike into an eventual five bagger and a win, and by then he regained all the momentum, easily defeating Sloan in the deciding game 233-165 for the win, his 5th career JBT crown, and second major, having won the Best in the West event in November.

Ian Hanuscin topped the field in the handicap division qualifying round to earn the #1 seed for the finals, and was able to maintain the momentum early in match play, starting 3-0 and avoiding the top-seed jinx that so often plagues bowlers.  #14 Eric Hatchett ended Hanuscin's undefeated run in game 4, en route to being the only one-loss bowler by round 6.

In that round, Hatchett handed #11 Darcie Staggs her second loss, Hanuscin did the same to #12 Rebeca Reguero, while #2 Alesha Pannier eliminated #15 Josh Shoup, and #9 Melissa Huether eliminated #7 Drew Stern.  In round 7, Hanuscin gave Hatchett loss number two, Staggs eliminated Reguero, and Huether eliminated Pannier.

In round eight, Huether eliminated Hatchett, while Staggs beat Hanuscin to stay alive.  This left three bowlers, which means Ian and Darcie had to play again, and this time Ian beat her, giving Darcie an exellent third place finish.

Hanuscin and Huether, both with two losses, then squared off for the title, and a confident Ian was able to defeat Melissa 223-191 for the title, the second of his JBT career, and by far his biggest scholarship check.

77 qualifiers shared in well over $7,000 in awarded scholarships- a huge windfall for our bowlers , made possible by our great sponsors, as well as our bowlers' support of our Tour all season.  Be ready for even bigger and better things as the JBT begins its 2008-09 season in September, but be sure to get in on all the great summer action JBT offers as well! \
