THE ORLEANS
champs BJ Baker & Rebeca Reguero
On an extraordinarily high scoring day, two bowlers continued
their extraordinary seasons with dramatic wins in JBT Mojave Conference action
at The Orleans. Brandon McMillen, who earned his first JBT
title the day before in Orange County, began a climb for two in a row with wins
over Miguel Lopez and Matt Jones (who fired a 300 game to open up the day) to
open the scratch division stepladder finals. Mike Cross then struck in the
tenth frame for an exciting 238-228 victory over McMillen to advance to the
title match against top seed Baker. Our highest scoring day
of the season produced a thrilling dogfight at the top of the standings, with BJ
emerging just one pin (+419) ahead of cross (+418), and only three more ahead of
Jones (+415) after eight games. Having worked so hard to grab that top
seed, Baker wasn't about to let it go, and after an opening spare he ran off the
next eleven strikes for a 290-188 victory. The win continues what is
quickly becoming the best extended streak in JBT history, as he captured the
32nd title of his JBT career, and seventh since the new year!
Paul Huether made his first JBT event in a while a success with an opening round
stepladder win over Jon Gutierrez. Newcomer Zac Hochman then defeated
Huether, before Danny Warden, in only his second event, stopped Hochman, to
advance to his first title match. Top seed Rebeca Reguero was
looking for an extremely important win, well behind points leader Eric Hatchett,
but already ahead of him in titles. Having an excellent
winter/spring herself, Reguero continued an excellent day in a 235-212 win, good
for her fourth career JBT title, and third in the Mojave Conference this year.
Among many other fine scores, Brian Ballard rolled his first JBT 300 game, and
Zach Hattori came oh-so-close, firing a 299 in qualifying as well.
Thanks to everyone at The Orleans for being excellent hosts as always. 69
bowlers shared in over $1,800 in scholarships awarded. The field is now
set for the 2008 Mojave Invitational. 108 bowlers are eligible to compete
for the $1,000 scholarship per division- don't miss it!
