PACIFIC NORTHWEST INVITATIONAL

champs Jordan Plunkett & Bryan Switzer II

Jordan Plunkett and Bryan Switzer II picked a great time to win their first JBT titles each, capturing $1,000 scholarships each as champions of the Pacific Northwest Invitational held at Burien's Hiline Lanes.

A demanding condition was laid out for this major championship, with under a 175 average good enough to make it into the scratch division's top 16 matchplay bracket.  Plunkett qualified first, one of only two bowlers to average over 200 in the 7-game qualifier, and was then able to hang on for a 414-379 win over hard charging #16 seed Lucas Stone in the round of 8.  The bracket then got completely upturned, as #14 Rob Edwards defeated #4 Patrick Hickok 511-482, #5 Matt West beat #3 Austin Marshall 352-348, and #15 Tyler Cruz squeezed by #2 Josh Jackson 405-399 in other round of 8 matches.

In the final four, Plunkett got by Edwards, the defending Bowler of the Year, 225-213, while West beat Cruz 231-214, setting up a title match between two JBT non-winners.

A well bowled finale from both bowlers saw Plunkett get the strike he needed in the tenth to lock up the win against Matt.  The 213-200 final score was good for Jordan's first title and the $1,000 scholarship windfall.

The handicap division matchplay bracket remained incredibly according to seed, as seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the round of eight.  In that round, top seed Ryan Templegot past #9 Cody Nelson 481-412; #4 Jessica Bubnich defeated #6 Matt Matias 466-382; #2 Brittany Arndt beat #7 Katie Beismann 410-393, while #5 Switzer produced the only upset, defeating #3 Travis McAllister 444-405, to round out the final four.

In the semifinals, Temple beat Bubnich 207-185, while Switzer eliminated Arndt, 213-186, setting up the title match.   In the title match, a confident Switzer turned the tables on the previously unstoppable Temple, beating him 233-207 to capture his first JBT title and the $1,000 first place scholarship.

Thanks to everyone at Hiline for another excellent job hosting us.  A huge $5,710 in scholarships was awarded to the 50 qualifiers. Want in on the fun?
