SILVA LANES (Sunday)

champs Geoffrey Young & Reanne Quesada

Geoffrey Young captured his 5th career title, while Reanne Quesada tasted JBT victory for the first time, in thrilling NM-TX Conference action at Silva Lanes.

Bowling on the medium-length pattern from the 2006 Junior Gold event, a premium was put on shotmaking, and Andy Byer made enough good shots in round one of the stepladder to beat William Entsminger 186-152.  Bill Grant then beat his good friend Andy 213-198, and followed with a 193-168 win over Stephen Gaucin to reach the title match.

Neither bowler looked comfortable on the tricky championship pair, but Young figured out the left lane ahead of Grant, and coasted to a 212-167 win, joining the short list of JBT bowlers with 5 or more career titles.

The handicap division, meanwhile, took most of the spotlight in the stepladders.  7 of the 8 finalists were girls, and Micayla Scheer won round one with a 213 game that beat Andrea Jaramillo (198) and California's Kaitlin Mayall (194).  In round two, William Yoder, the lone male, struggled to 195, and could only watch as Micayla and Sara Vargas ended up tying at 233, forcing a two-frame rolloff.  In the pressure-packed rolloff, both bowlers ended up with a 46 score, forcing what we think is the first double-rolloff in the handicap finals in JBT history.   In the second rolloff, Vargas could win with a 20-fill in the tenth, but when her last shot left a flat-10, they tied AGAIN at 34, the crowd erupted, and I missed my plane... forcing for sure the only triple-rolloff we've ever had in the handicap finals.  This time we finally had a winner, as Scheer won 46-32 to finally advance.

Everyone would have understood if Scheer simply collapsed after all that, but she rolled a fine 214 in the semifinals, beating Debbie Read's 208, but Reqnne Quesada came up with a bigger 221 to advance to her first final match.

Thanks to the rolloffs, top seed Bailey McFarland had to wait extra long for her match, another of many all-El Paso affairs in JBT history.  Though she is very comfortable at this center, having won an Invitational here, she struggled in the title match, while Quesada rolled on, defeating Bailey 218-194 for her first career JBT title.

88 bowlers competed in the event, all of whom got to participate in the annual JBT Easter Egg Hunt, which awarded over $100 in scholarships and thousands of jelly beans to everyone.  Over $2,100 was awarded overall- want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
