TENPINS & MORE
champs Geoffrey Young and Jamar McDaniel with GM Steve Mackie
Geoffrey Young pulled off one of the rarest feats in all of JBT, while Jamar McDaniel made some personal history, in exciting NM-TX Conference action at Tenpins & More.
Randy Cote has been much improved this season, and successfully opened the scratch division stepladder with a 194-173 win over the always-tough Andy Byer. Cote was good again in round two, getting by Colorado's Jess Gagliardi 193-158. Young then stopped Cote in the semifinal, 224-187, to reach the title match.
The omnipresent Billy Grant had led the field on the challenging Viper pattern, and facing Young in the finale set up all sorts of great story lines. Geoffrey and his partner had just beaten Billy and his partner in yesterday's Doubles title match, and Young's last singles title match here resulted in one of the most bizarre ends in JBT history, which while resulting in a win was a performance he'd like to improve on. Geoffrey did just that, bowling the high game of the finals in a 225-160 win over Grant for the title. The win was the 4th of his JBT career, and he becomes only the fifth bowler in JBT history to win two events in one weekend, a feat made even harder by the fact that it was a doubles-singles weekend!
The handicap division stepladder opened with Annabeth Griego defeating recent JBT champ Seth Jaramillo 203-195. Greigo remained on a roll from there, beating William Yoder 198-155, and following with a 213-207 squeaker over the energetic Peter Cane to reach her first title match.
Top seed Jamar McDaniel had struggled a bit in JBT this season, but bowled very well at his home house all day to grab the top seed. A close and entertaining title match came down to the tenth frame, where McDaniel hung on for a 192-185 win and the title, the first of his JBT career.
Big thanks to Steve Mackie and the crew at Tenpins for another top-notch job hosting us all weekend, as well as JD Nance, Jerod Florez, the Byers, and all the other assistants who made this event possible with another JBT event going on at the same time. Over $1,700 in scholarships was awarded- want in on the fun? Come on down to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
