A dominant team on paper proved to be just as dominant on the lanes, capturing the JBT's AZ Baker Shootout, hosted by AMF Christown.
DK's crew, pictured above, has a combined total of 83 JBT titles and over $86,000 in career JBT scholarship earnings. After a so-so start to their 12-game Baker-format qualifying round, they averaged 234 for the last 7 games to take the top qualifying spot, earning a one-round matchplay bye along with teams 2 through 4.
In the round of 12, the #5 seeded team 5 X's Better beat #12 Token Team. #7 Tucson Crew beat the Nevada team of #10 Negative, Bro. #9 Lebbs Plus 1 beat #8 We Got Spaghetti (a great name), and #11 Pink People upset the defending champs from last season, the No-Talent 2-Handers.
In the round of 8, all the bye teams advanced, except #3 The Show, which got shown the door by the Tucson Crew in an exclusively-Tucson match. In semifinal matches, Old Guys Rule (Riley and Jim Dempsey, Gino Salaverria, Mike Sora, Eduardo Perez) beat the Tucson Crew (Rachelle and Al Davis, Jeff Segneri, Andy Holick, Kristen Lee), while DK's crew snuck past #4 "Randy's a Daddy" (Matt Jones, Mike Cross, Cameron Smith, JR Monteith, Darcie Staggs), setting up the title match.
The Old Guys were not intimidated in the least at the statistical edge held by DK's crew, and stormed out to a game one title match win 268-193. However, the veterans of DK's Crew recovered to win the final two games to earn the title, 237-187 in the decider. The win was BJ's 35th and Bethany's 4th (I mean, c'mon, they named the format after them!), Kyle's 27th, Kris' 17th, and Matt Jones' 3rd, with the 1996-97 JBT Bowler of the Year last having won (with still our only title match 300 game) in April of 2001.
A sold-out field of 26 teams shows just how popular Baker format bowling is- thanks to everyone who is helping to make this newer event an extremely popular one already.
