BEDROXX

champs Shaun Morad & Dominic Luna

Shaun Morad and Dominic Luna captured JBT titles in the regular season wrapup to the Arizona Conference in exciting action aqt Tucson's Bedroxx bowling center.

Jacob Smith and Mike Kremer each opened the scratch division stepladder finals' opening match with the front five strikes, but it was Smith with the bigger string in the end, rolling to a 269-235 victory.    Morad then cooled off Smith 212-185, and followed that up with a 223-212 win over Miguel Lopez to advance to the title match.

Top seed Cameron Smith had already had a stellar weekend, earning his tenth career title the day before in Green Valley, and looked to pile on with a doubleheader sweep by capturing the top seed here.  In what proved to be a classic house-shot title match, Cameron's ten strikes were matched by Morad's, but Smith's third frame split proved to be his downfall, and Shaun, from the Los Angeles area but visiting family in Tucson, won the match 268-264 to claim his first career JBT title.

Danielle Stewart opened the eight-person handicap division stepladder finals with a 193 game that beat out Bethany Baker (188) and Jeff Anderson (160).   Emilio Luna then fired a 206 to defeat Stewart (196) and Brooks Gould (183).  In the semifinal match, both Luna brothers teamed to make sure Blake Kalaf didn't make it a doubleheader sweep on the weekend, as Dominic's 235 edged Emilio's 233, while Blake's fine 203 effort was good for a 4th place finish on the day.

Top seed Josh Shoup found himself leading a JBT event at just the right time, as the All-conference points leader  jumped into the Arizona Conference top 5 with the big day.  However, the Luna family was having a day of its own, with both brothers bowling great, leading at different points, and rolling up a combined +401 eight-game total.  Dominic stayed strong in the title match, and after Shoup struck out in the tenth, Luna got the mark he needed to wrap up a 233-217 win and his second career JBT title (even though I say first about twenty times in the video).

Thanks as always to the team at Bedroxx for doing a great hosting job at this unique center.  Over $2,000 in scholarships were awarded to the field.  The top 32 Arizona point scorers per division, plus anyone who had a top-5 finish throughout the season, now advance to the 2009 Arizona Invitational, featuring a $1,000 first place guaranteed scholarship per division.  Keep up to date on the best website in junior bowling, www.bowljbt.com, for results on the big summer events, and to check out the soon to be announced fall 209 schedule-  Don't miss it!
