MILWAUKIE BOWL
champs Lucas Stone & Ryan Gallagher
Lucas Stone and Ryan Gallagher were up to the test of challenging conditions, capturing JBT titles in exciting Pac NW Conference action at Milwaukie Bowl.
Bowlers who attend JBT events for a full season experience a full spectrum of lane conditions, and the PBA Viper pattern presented a tough test for the entrants, with the ones who stayed patient and made spares were the ones who rose to the top. Justin David struck plenty in round one of the scratch finals, beating Chris Kirk 237-199. Cody Stone then beat David in an exciting match 233-203, before Cruz beat Stone in the semifinals for the second consecutive day, this time 222-174, to reach his second consecutive title match.
Cruz waited a long time for his first win, but to make it two on the weekend, he'd have to get by the very tough top seed, Lucas Stone. Lucas has one of the most fundamentally solid physical games in all of JBT, and showcased it in this match enroute to a 212-178 win over Cruz, for his second JBT title. The win creates a logjam in the all-important points race, with Lucas only two points behind Cruz, and only six behind points leader (and brother) Nick Stone!
The handicap stepladder was filled with down to the wire matches, beginning with Krissy Nagasawa doubling in the tenth for a 215-213 win over Kyle Hays. Krissy was 'klutch' again in round two, getting a spare for a 182-172 win over Megan Green. Jessica Bubnich, looking for her third consecutive handicap division win (only accomplished once before in JBT history), then defeated Nagasawa 203-172 to advance to the title match.
It was deja vu all over again for the finalists, as top seed Ryan Gallagher, who dominated the event, and Bubnich squared off for the second consecutive event- rare enough for sure, but combined with Cruz' potential double-weekend-win in scratch, the stage was set for the unprecedented feat of the same winner in both divisions twice in a weekend. Well, we know from above that Tyler was thwarthed in his efforts by Lucas, and Ryan was able to stop Bubnich in her historic quest- but it sure wasn't easy. Gallagher bowled a solid title match, but for the second consecutive day, opened in the tenth to allow Jessica to mark for the win. However, Bubnich could not come up with the spare, and Ryan escaped with the 189-181 win and his 2nd career JBT title.
Over $1,500 in scholarships were awarded to all ages and averages at the event. Big thanks to PBA Hall of Famer Dave Husted and the whole crew at Milwaukie for making us feel very welcome every time we visit this historic center. Want in on the fun?
