ADMIRAL ROBINSON LANES

Scratch champ Brian Carmichael; handicap champ Justen Danforth was standing so far left he was out of the picture...

An exciting finish in both divisions capped off a great day of JBTSW action at Admiral Robinson Rec Center on the San Diego Naval Station.

The scratch division used our PBA Format for the first time in Southern California, producing the usual exciting matches.  Eventually the field was whittled down to four.  In the first semifinal, Steven Black faced Theo Douthit in what is becoming a terrific rivalry between the two.  Steven's double in the tenth forced Theo to do the same to win, and Douthit was up to the task, striking out for a 226-223 win.

If that wasn't enough, the other semi produced one of our all-time great matches.  Brian Carmichael and Jared Lawrence each adjusted to the drying conditions and began striking late in the match.  Jared's big 243 finish forced Brian to strike out to tie.  All three of Carmichael's shots were pure, and he tied it up at 243.  In our thrilling one-shot rolloff, Lawrence calmly packed 10 more in the pit, only to be answered by another flush hit from Carmichael.  On the next ball, Lawrence threw it well but only got nine, and Brian answered with another clutch strike to win the exhausting battle.

If there was any doubt if Carmichael had anything left in the tank, he erased it by staying in control of the match with Douthit the whole way.  His 203-180 victory was good for the second title of his JBT career.

As we mentioned above, the lanes were drying out, and that suited Justen Danforth just fine, as he climbed the ladder to his first JBT SW title.  The entire time, he stood left of the ball return (not in front of, but left and to the side of) the ball return for his shots on the right hand lane.  It worked like a charm as all the other bowlers struggled with the drying conditions.

Danforth began with a 212-162 win over Todd Udell.  His next match was his closest, as an unfortunate chopped spare in the tenth frame gave him a 203-200 win over Mimi Duong.  In the semifinal, Justen got by Todd's sister Stephanie 205-179, to advance against top qualifier Jordan Ferrer.

Ferrer bowled a So Cal event to break out of his slump in his home Mojave Conference, and he broke out of it in a big way by leading the event.   However, he had no answer for a confident Danforth, and the 249-198 win gave Justen JBT SW title #1.

Thanks as always to Dom DeLuca and the staff at Admiral Robinson for the privilege of bowling on base!
