SURF BOWL

Champs Jared Lawrence and Logan Bain

The proverbial hat rack for the proverbial hats thrown in the ring for Bowler of the Year is getting mighty crowded.  Jared Lawrence and Logan Bain came up with big wins at Surf Bowl to help set up a dramatic Invitational.

The scratch division finals opened with Shane Shimon, down from Northern California for Pepsi finals, marking in the tenth to defeat Christian Jensen 227-225.  Shimon then continued his impressive JBT SW debut, easily defeating Treico Holland 217-176, but then found himself in a low-scoring battle with Jared Lawrence.  Jared went strike-spare in the tenth, allowing Shimon to advance with a strike of his own.  Shimon's shot appeared to trip the 4-pin, but the pin ended up skidding almost to the 8-pin spot and not falling, shocking the crowd and giving Lawrence a 193-191 win.

Top qualifier Steven Black was looking for his 36th JBT SW title, but lack of carry in the title match meant he was destined for his second straight runner-up finish at Surf.  Lawrence began stringing mid-match, and the end result was a 248-212 victory, good for his 3rd career JBT SW title.  He also captured the points lead, and thus the #1 seed, going into the all-important Invitational in June.

In the high-scoring handicap division, Jesus Garcia snuck into the #8 seed, and took advantage with a 219 game that advanced over fine efforts by Justen Danforth (209) and Kyle Ruzylo (201).  Garcia stayed hot in round two, rolling a 225 to get by Andrew Chain (204) and Steven Lanning (174).  The semifinal match also went Jesus' way, firing a 231 to defeat Kaitlin Mayall (218) and Joe McLeod (203) to advance to the title match.

No #8 seed has ever won a So Cal event, and top-seed Logan Bain was in no mood to end that trend.  Bain shot an amazing 779 scratch series to roll to the fourth-highest 8-game score in JBTSW history (+407).  Even though he didn't keep up the same pace in the finals, he was more than Garcia could handle, and Logan cruised to a 230-189 win and his third career JBT SW title, all coming this season.

Thanks to everyone at Surf Bowl for once again hosting a fine event!
