WHITEWOOD LANES
champs William Haverland and Anthony McCarthy (no, they're not related...)
William Haverland
extended his JBT SW dominance with a second title, while Anthony McCarthy became
the first Oklahoma JBT SW champion, in action at Whitewood Lanes
In the scratch
division stepladder finals, Justin Medina defeated CJ brown 191-183 in a match
which saw neither bowler strike much, but a 4-6-7-10 conversion by Justin early
on proved to be the difference later.
In the next match, Medina got by Brian Collier in another low scoring
contest, 193-176, before smooth-rolling Bill Grant defeated Medina in the
semifinals, 222-184.
Top seed William
Haverland led the event wire-to-wire, and threw a big 290 game during
qualifying. William
has never NOT made the top 5 in any JBT SW event he’s entered, but has not
often had good luck in the finals, and found himself in another tight situation
against Grant.
A pivotal ninth frame saw William, up first, leave the 2-4-8-10, giving
Bill new life.
However, Haverland came up with the spare, and Bill then followed with a
solid-10 on a double, turning the match around completely in William’s favor.
In the end, the 221-210 victory was good for the second of his JBT SW
career.
In the handicap
division, Taylor Cruz, making his first finals appearance in quite a while,
opened with a big 264, good enough to defeat fine efforts by Dakota Kiser (236)
and Jessica Gibson (191).
In round two it was Cruz again, as his 225 defeated Jeff Tillman’s 203,
and Jamison Spam’s 197.
A tightly contested semifinal saw Jamie Tillman avenge Jeff’s loss with
a 232 game that beat Cruz (219) and the previous day’s champion Justin
Salazar’s 203.
Top qualifier
Anthony McCarthy rolled his first-ever 600 series to run away from the field in
the semifinals, but started slowly in the title match against Tillman.
However, he was able to regain his form and string strikes in the late
frames, pulling away for a 215-178 win over Tillman, good for his- and
Oklahoma’s- first JBT SW victory.
Thanks to Mary
Quintinella and her staff at Whitewood for a fine day.
Overall, over $3,600 in scholarships was awarded at this year’s Lubbock
doubleheader, a fantastic total!

BRC SOUTH PLAINS
champs Justin DeDera and Justin Salazar
Justin was the lucky name of the day as Mr. DeDera and
Mr. Salazar both came away with JBT SW titles in action at BRC South Plains.
In the scratch
division, Cody Winters, one of many bowlers enjoying their first JBT SW
experience, opened the stepladder finals with a big 269-205 win over William
Haverland. Haverland
had set the all-time JBT SW 8-game scoring record at South Plains last year, but
could not keep up with Winters’ strike barrage this time.
In round two, Winters fired a fine 237 game, but Brian Collier was more than up
to the task, rolling an even finer 266 to advance.
In the semifinals, Sam Cuevas was plagued by ill-timed 10-pins, and the
result was a 226-212 win for Collier, advancing him to his first JBT SW title
match (also in his first JBT SW event)
Top qualifier
Justin DeDera had roared through the field to grab the top seed, but found
himself in an exciting dogfight for the title.
The Amarillo contingent really got into it with Collier’s opening
triple, but Justin’s fans roared to life as he countered with his own turkey.
In the end, a chopped 6-10 in the ninth frame was Collier’s undoing,
and Justin stayed clean for a 238-213 win over Brian, good for the 4th
title of his JBT SW career.
In the handicap
division, Nathan Herring advanced with a 216 game, beating Christina Waldron’s
162, and edging Coy Gleason’s 214 when Gleason left a 6-count on his fill
ball. In
round two, Madeline McDonald came up with a big 230 that defeated Herring (211)
and AJ Lawson (200).
In the semifinal match, Cody Mansfield threw enough strikes to overcome
some missed spares, as his 226 game defeated 204 games by McDonald and Sonya
Taylor, to advance to the championship match.
Top qualifier
Justin Salazar had easily paced the field through most of the event, but faced
stiff competition in Mansfield, who possesses a powerful strike ball for his
age. In
the end, Salazar’s mark in the tenth forced Cody to double for the win.
Unfortunately for Mansfield, a good first shot left a 10-pin, resulting
in a 206-204 win for Salazar.
The win was the first of Justin’s JBT SW career.
