NEW YORBA LINDA BOWL

Yorba Linda scratch finalist Daniel Soraci and champ Josh Blanchard, Storm's Ricky Corona, handicap champ Kyle Ruzylo and finalist Erika Garcia

Josh Blanchard threw his proverbial hat in the Bowler of the Year race, while Kyle Ruzylo tasted victory for the first time, in JBT SW action at New Yorba Linda Bowl.

The scratch division bowled on a sport-compliant lane condition, and the shotmakers rose to the top of the large field.  Defending champion Kevin Valmonte opened the stepladder finals with a 213-178 win over always-steady Brian Carmichael, who had opened the day with a big 279 game.

In round two, Valmonte remained red hot, tossing a big 245 game to outdistance Anthony Dancel's 163 effort.  Kevin cooled off in the semifinals, though, and Josh Blanchard took advantage for a 179-163 win, advancing him to the title match.

Top qualifier Daniel Soraci was leading a JBT SW event for the first time, and unfortunately suffered opens in the first two frames of the title match.  He came back strong, however, but a 4-9 in the 7th on a double really derailed the comeback.  Blanchard, meanwhile, bowled a clean, confident game, finishing with a 5-bagger for a 238-181 win over Soraci, good for the third title of his JBT SW career.

The handicap finals really stole the spotlight for the day, though.  The ladder opened with Samantha Meyers rolling a very respectable 196, but Taylor Brennan, on a mission from Arizona to qualify for the So Cal Invitational, bettered that with 218.  All he could do was watch, though, as Shane Peck needed three strikes to tie the match.  The handicap division points leader flushed the first two strikes, and then threw just as good a ball on the final shot, but a solid-9 stood, giving Brennan a one-pin victory.  Shane has had more than his share of bad breaks this year (and plenty of good ones including a title this spring), but again showed great sportsmanship after the crushing loss, so we congratulate him on that.

Justen Danforth's powerful strike ball was enough to get him through the round two match, as his 199 game beat Bryan Valles' 173, and Brennan's 177.  Taylor's fifth place finish did get him into the valuable Invite, however.  The semifinal match then provided another one-pin thriller.  Danforth chipped in a 202, but was eliminated as Joe McLeod and Kyle Ruzylo, from the same league in Oceanside, went at each other.  In the end, even though McLeod went spare-strike in the tenth, the result was a 235-234 win for Ruzylo, advancing him to his first championship match.

Eleven year-old top qualifier Erika Garcia was also leading a JBT SW event for the first time, but unfortunately was to suffer the same fate as Soraci did in the scratch division, as Ruzylo maintained his momentum and snared an early lead.  Despite a late double from Garcia, Kyle's lead was prohibitive, and the 228-201 final score was good for the first title of Ruzylo's career.

Thanks to Butch Hesketh and everyone at Yorba Linda for a fantastic day of JBT SW competition that set Southern California Conference records for JBT SW attendance (92 bowlers) and regular-season awarded scholarships ($2,095).
