SO CAL INVITATIONAL

Bryce Nakunz, Chase Simmons, Solomon Salama, Skyler McGowan; Elias O'Hollaren, Katelyn Abigania

Solomon Salama and Chase Simmons earned $1,000 scholarships as champs of the JBT So Cal Invitational tournament, hosted by Montclair's Bowlium Lanes.

Scores were overall fairly high by Invitational standards, but nobody was close to scratch division top seed Solomon Salama, who blasted the 5th highest 5-game qualifying score in JBT history at +314 en route to the #1 spot.  The ensuing triple-elimination matchplay can be a minefield for high seeds, but Solomon navigated through seven rounds with only one loss.  In round eight, Solomon eliminated fellow Junior Team USA member and #6 Cerell Cardines, and #13 Skyler McGowan outsed #10 Gael Egana, who had been the last player with no losses, while #8 Elias O'Hollaren watched the carnage with a bye.  Salama eliminated Elias (who still earned Bowler of the Year honors) in the next round though, leaving McGowan with the task of beating Solomon twice to snag the title.  Salama slammed the door on that mission by running the front 8 strikes in the next game, completing the dominant performance for the $1,000 top prize and 29th career title of his JBT career.

Jacob McGough had the best run in the early rounds of the handicap division finals, getting through six rounds undefeated.  When #9 Jasmia Alshamary and entertaining newcomer #13 Jon Abigania bowed out, it created a merry-go-round between #11 Bryce Nakunz, Mc Gough, and top seed Chase Simmons, who had been cruising through with one loss.  When Nakunz finally eliminated McGough in round ten (just shy of enough points for Bowler of the Year, which Kendall Bollea hung on to), it created a one game final between him and Chase.  Simmons stayed in control of the finale for the win and second career title to go with the $1,000 windfall.

Elias' fine day was capped off by a U17 Invitational win over Sebastian Huffman, which also earned him Bowler of the Year honors in that subdivision.  Katelyn Abigania consolidated her Girls Scratch Bowler of the Year season with a win over Emily Cheesman for the Invitational title.

Huge thanks to Al and the Bowlium team for hosting this tremendous event, which awarded over $5,400 in scholarships to bowlers of all ages and skill levels.  The top 20 in So Cal points now advance to the Touring Players Championship to compete for our most prestigious title of the season!
