MOUNTAIN INVITATIONAL
champs and finalists Hunter Mayes, Brad Harvey, Coy Dickson, Kloey Kielich, Lucas Wilson, Kendall Bollea, Jordan Womble
Brad Harvey and Coy Dickson earned $1,000 scholarships as champions of the 2021 JBT Mountain Conference Invitational tournament, hosted by Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho NM.
Hunter Mayes blasted his second straight runaway qualifying performance to grab the number one seed for the exciting triple-elimination matchplay rounds. An early loss hobbled him, but he rebounded with six straight wins, including an elimination of Alex Harmon, to reach the title match. His opponent would be #3 Brad Harvey, who was steady throughout matchplay, getting past an elimination game with his brother in round eight to set up a scenario where he would need to beat Mayes twice to win the title. The first match was a classic that came down to the tenth, with Harvey getting a clutch strike for a 254-244 win and pushing it to a final game. Brad stayed in control for that one, and claimed his fourth career JBT title and second Invitational title with the victory. Hunter's huge weekend was enough to get past Brock Bivins for Mountain Conference Bowler of the Year.
In the handicap division, Kendall Bollea had a brilliant qualifying round (+92 scratch!) to nab the number one seed, but came out on the wrong end of some very tough matches, ending in 12th place. #5 Lucas Wilson was the last undefeated bowler in triple-elimination matchplay, but slowed down in later rounds, bowling out to #8 Kloey Kielich to finish in third. #10 Angela Romero lost in the same round to #6 Coy Dickson, and her fourth place finish was just enough to squeeze onto the Mountain all-star team. Kloey then had the tough task of beating Coy twice for the title, since Dickson only had one loss. Coy wasn't about to drag things out, rolling a great game to finish off the victory and a big first career JBT title. Kloey's runner-up performance was enough to boost her into the handicap Bowler of the Year honors.
Kendall's great qualifying round put her in both the U17 and Girls Scratch Invitational finals. She beat Aileen Linares for the Girls win, but Aileen had enough points to secure Girls Scratch Bowler of the Year in a win-win situation. In U17, Jordan Womble finally caught a break on the weekend, getting past Bollea for the win, which earned him enough points to be crowned U17 Bowler of the Year.
20 of the 35 qualifiers shared in a $4,276 scholarship fund. Big thanks to Steve, Mike, and the team at Tenpins for their usual great hosting job. The top 20 in Mountain points now advance to the Touring Players Championship, our most prestigious event, featuring $2,000 top scholarship prizes!
